Today we responded to an emergency service call at The Bass Museum in South Beach, Florida, where an iguana had become trapped inside a roof drainage channel located above one of the gallery spaces.
Based on the situation and inspection, the iguana most likely accessed the building by climbing onto the roof and exploring the structure — a behavior that is very common for iguanas. Rooftops typically provide ideal conditions for them, as they retain heat and create warm environments perfect for basking.
At this time of year, iguanas are emerging from their winter slowdown and actively searching for sunlight, warmth, and suitable nesting locations where they can lay eggs. Elevated structures such as roofs, seawalls, and architectural ledges often become temporary habitats.
Access Challenges and Equipment Used
The location of the iguana presented a significant access challenge. The area was positioned at a considerable height, and a standard 20-foot ladder was not sufficient to safely reach the animal.
To resolve the situation safely, a scissor lift was brought to the site. This equipment proved highly effective, allowing precise and secure access to the roof channel where the iguana was located.
Once positioned correctly, we were able to reach the animal without causing damage to the structure or disturbance to the gallery environment.
Successful Removal
The cooler temperature inside the roof channel helped slow the iguana’s movement, which allowed for a controlled and safe capture. The animal was successfully removed without incident.
Under Florida law, captured invasive green iguanas cannot be relocated or released back into the wild (“no catch and release”). Following state regulations, the iguana was transported to our facility and humanely euthanized in accordance with wildlife management guidelines.
Why Professional Iguana Removal Matters
Situations like this highlight how adaptable iguanas are in urban environments. They frequently access roofs, attics, canals, and elevated architectural features, creating risks for:
Property damage
Safety hazards
Sanitation concerns
Structural complications in commercial buildings
Professional equipment and trained handling are essential to resolve these situations safely and legally.
Iguana Jones Removal provides emergency and scheduled iguana control services throughout Miami and South Beach, helping protect residential and commercial properties during peak iguana season.
